What are the requirements to study medicine in China?

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degrees are available in Chinese universities. As an undergraduate program, it is open to high school graduates aged 18 and above.

They must be in good physical and mental health. They must have good grades and be fluent in English.

How long does it take to obtain a medical degree from a Chinese medical school?

It takes at least six years to obtain an MBBS degree in China. The first year consists of basic courses, while the second and third years are dedicated to learning the basics of medicine. In the fourth and fifth years, students study clinical medicine. In the final year, students participate in an internship in China or in another country.

Best medical schools in China

1. Tsinghua University, Faculty of Medicine

Admission.

Tsinghua University is ranked as the best university in China in the world university rankings and one of the most selected medical schools in China. Although it was only founded in 2001, it is inspired by one of China’s elite universities, the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). Founded in 1917, the PUMC was modeled on the US medical education system.

Admission to this top Chinese medical school is highly competitive, with only around 90 students accepted each year. Unlike other schools, Tsinghua University uses an eight-year system. The first three years are dedicated to developing the knowledge base. The next two years are devoted to the teaching system and the last three to the rigorous demands of clinical medicine.

2. Peking University and Health Sciences Centre (HSC)

Admission.

The University Medical School is under the auspices of the Peking University Health Sciences Centre. It operates alongside other health-oriented institutions and the university’s many hospitals. Peking University is a former imperial university in Beijing and a prestigious school of the C9 League (China’s version of the Ivy League).

Founded in 1902, it was the first medical school in China to adopt the British system of medical education. It was therefore also the first school in China to teach modern Western medicine to its students.

Students who complete a six-year degree in clinical medicine can practice in any (or all) of the eight hospitals with which the school is affiliated. The school also has 19 research institutes and 38 research centers.

3. Fudan University and Shanghai Medical College (SMC)

Admission.

The history of the Shanghai Medical College dates back to 1927, when it was founded by Dr Yan Fuqing. It is one of the best medical schools in China, especially after the government approved its merger with Fudan University in 2000.

Currently, there are two types of clinical medicine degrees – a six-year degree and an eight-year degree, with the six-year degree being taught in English, making it suitable for foreign students.

The eight-year program, on the other hand, is designed for students who can hone their clinical and scientific skills simultaneously. Students will also have the opportunity to work with colleagues from prestigious universities such as Harvard and Columbia.

The SMC is currently located on a 1,900 square metre campus in Fenlin. The school collaborates with 10 hospitals, where students can complete clinical placements.

4. Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Faculty of Medicine

Admission.

Founded in 1952, the school formed in 2005 by the merger of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is one of only two schools awarded an A+ grade in clinical medicine by the Chinese Ministry of Education and has consistently ranked first among all clinical medical schools in China from 2009 to 2018.

In addition to providing world-class medical education, the school also aims to foster outstanding clinical researchers. This clearly reflected in the U.S. News rankings, where the University is ranked 17th in publications and 37th in regional research rankings.

Zhejiang University School of Medicine

The university started as Zhejiang Medical University in 1912, and after several changes, it was officially named Zhejiang University School of Medicine in 1999.

In this case, it belongs to the prestigious C9 Consortium and considered one of the elite medical schools in China. It is also one of 36 double-class universities in China.

Zhejiang University, located on the Zijinjiang Campus, is one of the leading medical schools in China. It has seven affiliated hospitals and many research institutes.

It is especially known for its outstanding academic achievements and impressive international reputation. In fact, according to U.S. News, it ranked 10th and 14th in academic societies and publications, respectively.

6. Nanjing Medical University (NMU) – School of Medicine

Next on our ranking of the best medical schools in China is Nanjing Medical University. Found in 1934 as the Jiangsu Academy of Health Policy and Management, the university moved to its current location in 1957 and was renamed Nanjing Medical University.

In 2005, NMU’s School of Medicine became one of the first universities to offer an MBBS program in English. It is also one of the most selective schools, admitting only 100 students each year.

NMU has two campuses, with the majority of clinical teaching and research taking place at the 8-hectare Wutai campus.

NMSU has four clinical medical schools, one of which attached to the first affiliated hospital specializing in cardiology. The second faculty has 14 teaching and research departments. The third hospital specializes in cardiovascular surgery and the fourth in pediatrics.

7. Zhongshan University – Zhongshan Medical School

Zhongshan Medical College, formerly known as the School of Preclinical Medicine, is located on the Guangzhou campus of Zhongshan University. Founded in 1866 as Fu Chi Medical College, it is the oldest western medical school in the country. An interesting fact is that the famous Sun Yat-sen studied medicine here.

After a series of name changes and mergers, the Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine established in 1985. Like other schools, it offers a 6-year MBBS as well as an 8-year clinical medicine course.

With over 100 years of history, the school considered one of the best in the country. This reflected in the U.S. News list, which ranks it 34th in publications on clinical medicine and 37th in area studies.

8. Zhongnan University-Xiangya Medical School

Access

Changsha University of Technology – Xiangya Medical School (formerly Xiangya Medical College) had modest beginnings. It established in 1914 as one of the few schools offering Western medicine to Chinese students. It later merged with CSU, which was first established in 2000.

Locate in Hunan Province, this medical school is considered one of the top Double-A universities in China.

Course Search for International Students

CSU students spend most of their time on both campuses. Medical students housed at the old campus where the Third Sengoku Hospital is located. Master’s students, on the other hand, study at the new campus. The Sengoku Hospital and the National Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics are also located there.

9. Sichuan University and Western China College of Medicine（WCCM)

Formerly known as Western China Unite University, WCCM was founded in 1914 by Western doctors and missionaries. After several name changes, it merged with Sichuan University to form West China University.

WCCM offers a six-year MBBS program taught in English. Students can do their clinical studies at the country’s largest hospital, the 4,300-bed West China Hospital, considered one of the top three medical centers in China.

WCCM is one of the country’s top medical schools, affiliated with the only evidence-based medical center in Asia. WCCM is thus one of only 14 such institutions in the world.

10. Southern Medical University (SMU) – School of Clinical Medicine

Admission.

Finally, we present South China Medical University (SMU) – one of the top medical schools in China. Located in Guangzhou’s Baiyunshan district, this school founded in 1951 as the First Military Medical University. After approval by the State Council and the Central Military Commission, it eventually renamed SMU.

The school renowned for its School of Clinical Medicine, which offers an eight-year program for students who wish to become doctors. Students taught in a variety of ways, including classroom instruction, problem-base learning, group learning, and independent learning.
