ACI Certification Programs for Field Service Technicians
Field Technician Education Requirements
Depending on the industry, Field Technicians’ work is highly specialized. Although this is true, field service consists primarily of maintenance and repair. Computer science and information systems or a field similar to computer technology are the most preferred majors for field technicians.
Furthermore, they should be capable of diagnosing and solving problems based on non-technical descriptions provided by their clients. A basic understanding of how operating systems and computers work would be beneficial to technicians.
ACI certification or ACI Strength Testing Certification for Field Technicians
A Concrete Strength Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the ability to conduct, record and report the results of four basic laboratory procedures related to the determination of concrete compressive and flexural strength.
This is the history of ACI certification
Since the 1980s, ACI has certified more than half a million concrete technicians, supervisors, inspectors, and managers. As ACI’s most popular program, Concrete Field Testing Technician–Grade I was the first to be offered. Since the program began, more than 250,000 field testing technician certifications have been issued. An important part of the field technician training involves the ability to properly conduct and record the results of seven basic tests on freshly mixed concrete:
- The temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
- Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
- The slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
- Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
- Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
- Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
- Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
ACI recently expanded its remote testing options for select programs due to limitations limiting in-person testing. Through ACI University, on-demand courses such as Concrete Field Testing, Concrete Strength Testing, Concrete Construction Inspection, and Adhesive Anchor Installer saw record enrollments. The number of certification credentials issued during 2020 exceeded 15,000 despite the interruptions. The Shotcrete Inspector certification program and the Nondestructive Testing Specialist – Concrete Strength program were also launched. The certification activity increased in the first quarter of 2021 to match that of 2019, continuing the rising trend of certification numbers and proving the importance of certification to the construction industry.
As a result of expressed demand for such programs internationally, ACI creates new certification programs in direct response to market needs. The ACI Concrete Construction Sustainability and Resilience Assessor program is currently in development, as is the ACI 318 Design Professional program currently under development. The ACI Certification Programs Committee, an operational committee, is responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, and updating of ACI certification programs and policies.
Individual certification committees are established as subcommittees under a new certification programs committee that develops program materials. After a new program has been launched, these subcommittees become operational committees responsible for maintaining program content and exam materials, as well as establishing program-specific administrative policies. ACI committees bring together materials and engineering experts as well as application experts.

How to Become ACI-Certified
ACI’s website offers a certification page at ACICertification.org, where people can start the certification process. The list includes all certification programs currently available. Interested candidates can identify training and testing locations through dropdown menus once a program has been selected. Around the world, ACI offers certifications through 120 sponsoring organizations, including chapters, industry nonprofits, and other groups.
With the launch of ACI’s new resource centers in the Spring of 2021, training and examination opportunities will be expanded. In addition to study materials provided by these groups, candidates can use ACI workbooks and online training to prepare for examinations. ACI enters the individual into the database of certified personnel after passing the certification exam, the final step in getting certified.
